Throughout his life, the artist, Richard Treaster, found great interest in maps and maritime charts. Somewhere along the way, he began to use these in his water color paintings.
In the 1980s, he began to do commissions for corporations. The use of still-life, combined with maps and charts, aroused interest throughout the United States. The paintings combine the artist's talents to use modern design and color in complex paintings. The artist himself admited he found the paintings a never ending surprise, as they unfolded each day.
Richard Treaster's paintings are in the collections of 80 corportations and art museums. Maureen Farrell, former map librarian at Cleveland Public Library wrote an article about Mr. Treaster for Mercator's World (vol. 1, no. 3, 1996, p. 56-58).
Mr. Treaster died in 2002.
