St. Emeric Given Parish Status

St. Emeric Catholic Church, founded 60 years ago to serve Hungarian immigrants, was made a regular parish with boundaries today by Archbishop Edward F. Hoban.
The church at 1904 W. 22d St. will retain its nationality status in the move to "provide adequately for the spiritual needs of the faithful in that area," the bishop said.
The change will affect the enrollment at St. Malachi Parish around W. 25th St. near the Detroit-Superior Bridge. Archbishop Hoban cited construction of apartment buildings on the southern edge of St. Malachi Parish but near St. Emeric Church.
St. Malachi, a predominantly Irish-American parish, was founded in the "Angle" in 1865 as a division of St. Patrick Parish on Bridge Ave.
