Cleveland, Ohio Along
The Nickel Plate Road

The Nickel Plate Railroad Station on Broadway Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1910

This is the first of a series on the the New York, Chicago, & St. Louis Railway (Nickel Plate or NKP) in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1926 the NKP undertook a grade elimination project along its right-of-way in Cleveland east from Kinsman Rd. to East 93rd St. At the start of the project the NKP took a series of photographs that documented the conditions both along its right-of-way and the adjacent neighborhoods. In 1930 the NKP produced another series of photographs, this time along its right-of-way through Lakewood, Ohio, a western suburb of Cleveland. Each series of images form a rare photographic cross-section of a major American metropolitan area in the mid-1920's and early 1930's.

The images on this site are from the collection of railroad materials donated to CSU by Mr. Gerald Adams. These 5" x 7" black & white photographs came to CSU pasted back-to-back on stiff paper and housed in three-ring binders. This has resulted in slight-to-moderate rippling of some of the photographs and accounts for the light splotches on a number of scans. Also, over a quarter of the images have experienced a significant degree of fading for which we have used Adobe Photoshop in attempting to revive the images.
