The abstracts digitized in this edition were summarized by the Annals of Cleveland staff from early Cleveland newspapers. These newspapers documented the conditions and attitudes of the times during which they were published. Cleveland's first newspaper, the Cleaveland Register, was published irregularly, due to an unreliable supply of paper for printing. The founder of the city's second paper, the Cleveland Herald, made deliveries in two-day circuits on horseback during the publication's first few years of existence. The Cleveland Whig supported Whig politics and expressed support of the anti-slavery movement.
